Summary

Description
English: Madku dweep is a small island found surrounded by the Shivnath river of Chhattisgarh state. It is near Madku village of Bilaspur district, near a road connecting Raipur and Bilaspur (Highway 130). The rural road to the island gets submerged when rains arrive, where upon local villagers provide a boat service.

The island's claim to fame is that this is where two of the major Upanishads of the Hindu tradition – Mandukya and Mundaka – were composed in ancient times. Locals state that the India's emblematic "Satyameva Jayate" (Truth ultimately triumps) was coined here.

The island is an archaeological site and groups of small temples have been uncovered on the island. The date of these temples is unknown. Natural erosion, likely from floods and drying cycles, has left an outline of many temples. All have a square plan, with a few sanctums featuring Shiva linga pitha (base).

The memorial features a rishi (Vedic teacher, poet sage) with verses of Hindu scriptures (Upanishad) and surrounded by Mandukas (frogs).

The locals have built several other more modern Hindu temples here, including a small hut and memorial for Mandukya rishi. The island has boards featuring verses from the Principal Upanishads, particularly the Mundaka Upanishad.
